Feature Film Categories

The mission of the Austin Revolution Film Festival is to recognize a wide variety of independent film from around the world. Multiple genres from around the world. However, all filmmakers have been there. You go to a festival, you pay for your flight (or gas Damien), your room, food, buy your fest t shirt, only to see the festival runner’s buddies win.

We’ve done our best to address that by separating the competition. U.S. films compete against U.S. films, Texas films against Texas and foreign against foreign. We feel this levels the playing field as much as possible and still meeting the responsibilities we have for the festival: to support local film communities and further indie film as a whole world wide community. So this year, here are the feature film categories. (comedy and drama are separate categories).

New Sub-Categories

We really believe in the mission of the Austin Revolution. We try to follow it in two ways.

  1. We focus on movies that are truly independent and that show a renegade spirit of making movies. We want the films that aren’t weighed down by budgets and are instead lifted by stories. We’re not against playing movies with a ‘big budget’ or names, but that is also not going to be a factor in whether we accept a film or not. Unpopular to say, but we believe in transparency.
  2. We are also recognizing a few films from populations or about topics that might miss the mainstream. They are revolutionaries in content! We’ll be honoring Veteran made films (or films with a veteran theme), LGBT movies and movies than deal with social issues.

How are we different?

When we set up the Austin Revolution Film Festival, it was based on some of our very early festival experiences. We had played some newer fests and these fests often acted like they were too good for us. As if they were one season away from being Sundance and they could quit playing “little” films like ours.

That impression stood with us and really drove us in creating our core values of why we do it and how we do it. Things like avoiding big sponsors who will want to have a say in content.

On our twitter feed, we’ve been outlining 5 things that we think make us stand out. And we used a cute puppy to help!

What We’re About…

We are so excited about the turn out of filmmakers and fans for this year’s events. It begs the question…what is the Austin Revolution Film Festival about? It’s about true indie films and making the filmmakers the star of the fest and showing the audience that there are good stories out there if you go and look for them.

For fans, we want to expose them to the world of indie film that maybe they don’t even know exists. What these films lack in huge budgets they make up for in story, heart, innovation and honesty. We always talk about remakes and sequels. Come see the alternative to those.

For filmmakers, we try to make everything about the festival truly about YOU. You guys are the stars. You’ll be on the panels. I’m not interested in having some guy who played a killer in some B horror flick 30 years ago show up to take the spotlight away when, at the end of the day, he’s not relevant anymore. You (the filmmakers) are relevant.

We built this fest based on fests we’ve seen do things right. We’ve also based a lot of it on the fests that do it wrong. We’re not going to nickel and dime you. We’re going to keep building this event and making it an event where you can expose your film to new audiences, but more importantly where you can network with other filmmakers and grow opportunities to increase all of your exposure, both as individuals and as collectives. It’s the only way to change things in entertainment. And this is, after all…a revolution.
